Submitted By: Kevin Padoa Date: 8th July 2001
Bike: BMW R1150GS Round Trip km: +/- 160
Venue: Several in Cullinan Breakfast Cost: Depends on Venue
Rating (1 - 5): 3 Status: Verified
Departure From: Randburg or the Caltex Petrol Station at New Road in Midrand
Route Type: Easy Tour or Cruise.   Good road surface most of  the way but very bumpy approaching Cullinan along the R513 (nice corners though).
Comments:

There are a few venues which are worth a look into.  We went to the Uitkyk Restaurant which looks out over the Great Hole of the old Premier Diamond mine.  This is a remarkable sight and well worth the trip.

The other venue is the Railroad Steakhouse which is built in the old railway siding buildings.

There are a few more worth having a look at and tours to the mine are available.

Outward Bound:

There are several ways to get there from Randburg.

You need to get to the Zambezi Offramp from the N1 which goes to Pietersburg, so

  • Follow the R28 (Krugersdorp Highway) until it joins the N1 and goes all the way around Pretoria until you get to the Zambezi Off ramp (R513).

OR

  • Take the N3 towards Germiston and turn onto the N1 to Pretoria at the interchange near Kelvin / Woodmead (after Rivonia road).

  • Take the offramp to Centurion / Pietersburg and follow the road all the way until the Zambezi Turn off.

THEN

  • At the off-ramp, turn right onto the R513 and follow this road all the way until you get into Cullinan

  • The road is pretty good all the  way but becomes pretty bumpy towards the end.  There are some pretty good corners which need to be taken reasonably cautiously due to the bumps.

The entrance to the Uitkyk restaurant is on the left as you approach the town (in the middle of a sharp left-hander so watch out).

The Railroad steakhouse is at the old station and is a little further along the road after the Uitkyk restuarant.

Going Home:

You can go back the way you came

OR

  • Go through Cullinan and take the road to Bronkhorstspruit (you can also go via Rayton)

  • At the T-Junction (R513 / R568, turn right and follow the R568 until the next T-Junction (R568 / R25)

  • Turn right and follow the R25 which will take you through the town and across the N4 (You can get onto the N4 and return to Pretoria if you want to - this is the 160km version)

  • Follow the R25 until it splits into the R25 / R42 either of which will take you around the Bronkhorstspruit Dam

  • R25 takes you on the back road to Bapsfontein and onto Benoni / Kempton Park and home

  • R42 takes you to the N12 or further onto Delmas if you want a longer ride.
